‘The Last Clowns’

The Last Clowns

The last two clowns were waiting
For their call to take the stage
One cried tears of sorrow
The other tears of rage
Their painted smiles told nothing
Of the pain they felt within
Their lives were only acting
Both wearing a false grin

The audience was watching
As they tripped upon the boards
The greasepaint and the powder
Oh how the crowd it roared!
But who can tell what goes on
Behind a make-up smile
The terror and the torment
Of every walking mile

But when the show is over
The house lights on again
The audience see each other
As they walk out in the rain
Their painted smiles tell nothing
Of the pain they feel within
Their lives are only acting
All wearing a false grin

We all are clowns and waiting
For our call to take the stage
Some cry tears of sorrow
Others tears of rage
Our painted smiles tell nothing
Of the pain we feel within
Our lives are only acting
All wearing a false grin
